Social Services

Social Services are provided by a full time social worker.  She provides case management, mental health assessments, memory screenings, support groups for older adults dealing with depression and/or compulsive hoarding.  Supportive services for patients with Parkinson’s and their caregivers and families are also available. Telephone Reassurance, a friendly call daily to check in on homebound older residents, is available by calling the Social Worker at (847) 459-2670. Information and referral to local resources and Benefits Check-up are also available through the Social Services section of the Senior Services Department.

Senior Social Services offers many programs and services for Wheeling’s older adult population:

          Bereavement Support. Bereavement counseling is available by appointment.  Please call 847-459-2670
         and ask for Jan Christiansen.

          Information referrals.  If you need resources for yourself or an aging parent or relative, our specialized
         staff can help.  Give us a call with your questions, we’re glad to help!

          Support Groups - See below:

Wished, Felt, and Dreamed A support group for older adults who suffer from chronic clutter and compulsive hoarding. Monthly discussions will be chapters from the book Buried in Treasures-Help for the Compulsive Acquiring, Saving & Hoarding by Tolin, Frost & Steketee.  For more information call Jan Christiansen, MSW, (847) 459-2670.

Life With Parkinson's Group meets the 3rd Wednesday of each month at Pavilion.  This group is ongoing for Parkinson Patients & Caregivers Disease.  Informational and social activities are planned monthly. No registration necessary.

Freedom, Forgiveness, and Fellowship meets the 2nd Friday of the month. Department of Senior Services hosts this ongoing support group for older adults who suffer from depression, feel sad or unhappy at times during their lives. Call Jan Christiansen, MSW, 847-459-2670, for more information.  Group held at the Wheeling Pavilion Senior Center

Telephone reassurance- Would you like someone to check in on you or a family member or a friend with a friendly morning call Monday through Friday? Caring volunteers call participants to check in.  If participant does not answer after several attempts, their emergency contact will be called to check on the older adult.  Just a little extra piece of mind…..  Call  459-2670 to register today.
