Recyclable materials should be placed in your
recycling cart (the one with a yellow lid) at the curb on your regular collection
day. Materials do not need to be segregated within the
cart. Recycling carts will be provided by Waste Management
for use beginning June 1, 2004. General Guidelines:
Do not mix household refuse with recyclables in your recycling
cart. Mixed refuse will not be collected.
All recyclable materials should be rinsed free
of food with caps or lids removed.
Cardboard must be flattened into 2 foot by 2 foot squares.
Place cardboard inside or next to the recycling cart.
All acceptable recyclable items should be placed together inside
your recycling cart for collection.
Materials that can be recycled include:
aluminum cans, foil, and formed containers
steel or tin cans
empty aerosol cans
glass bottles and jars only; brown, green or
clear glass
newspapers, magazines and catalogs, telephone directories,
kraft brown paper bags, paperboard
junk mail, mixed paper
plastics – includes #1 PET (1 and 2 liter
soda bottles, plastic plates and trays), #2 HDPE (laundry
detergent containers, milk and water bottles, margarine
tubs, baby wipe containers, plastic cups), #3 PVC (cooking
oil bottles, shampoo bottles, liquor bottles),
#4 LDPE (squeeze mustard bottles, shampoo bottles) and #5 PP
(deli containers, cosmetic containers, six and twelve pack plastic
rings.
The following materials are NOT ACCEPTED as
recyclables:
motor oil, anti-freeze, pool chemicals, or
hazardous waste
containers
mirrors, window glass, Pyrex dishes, and light bulbs
containers larger than 1 gallon
scrap metal food or contaminated paper
What Can I Recycle?
The Village of Wheeling encourages residents to reduce,
reuse and recycle. The following are items for recycling.
All recyclable materials should be rinsed free of food

Also, please do not place recyclable materials in plastic
bags.

NO mirrors, window glass, Pyrex dishes, or light bulbs
Plastics (All recycling codes can be numerically
identified in a triangle on containers)

#3 (PVC)
#4 (LDPE)
#5 (PP)
#6 (PS)
#7 (Other)
Such codes apply to: plastic soft drink, water, and
sports drink bottles; milk, water, juice cosmetic, shampoo
or laundry detergent bottles; yogurt or margarine tubs;
peanut butter, pickle, jelly or jam containers; plastic
flower pots; plastic plates and trays; deli containers,
egg cartons, six and twelve pack rings; empty baby wipe
containers; plastic cups; cosmetic containers; empty
medicine bottles; compact disc jackets; etc.
Paper (No food or contaminated paper)
Newspapers: all inserts accepted
Magazines & catalogs: glossy and non-glossy
Telephone directories
Brown paper bags
Paperboard (chipboard): cereal boxes, tissue boxes, pasta
boxes, clothing boxes, frozen food boxes, beverage
carriers
Junk mail: flyers, post cards, brochures, greeting cards,
window envelopes, advertisements
Mixed paper: stationary, post-it notes, typing paper,
notebook paper, computer paper, bond paper
Cardboard: corrugated cardboard must be flattened into 2'
x 2' squares.
NO motor oil, anti-freeze, pool chemicals, or hazardous
waste containers accepted.
Medical SHARPS Disposal Program
The Prescription Drug and Sharps Disposal Program is held every third
(3rd) Saturday of each month from 10:00 am until 12:00 Noon.
Beginning June 19, 2010, the drop off location will be in the Main
Entrance of the Police Station, at 1 Community Boulevard, Wheeling, IL.

Wheeling
residents can drop off unwanted medications and used sharps (needles and
syringes). We accept prescription and over the counter medications
in original containers. We do not accept controlled substances
such as Oxycontin and Percocet. Sharps must be in rigid containers
with sealed lid. ** WILL NOT accept sharps that are not in a rigid
container. New sharps containers are available through the
Community Development Department Health Division, located at 2 Community
Blvd. You can also get a new container when you drop off your full
sharps container.
