The Investigations Division is responsible for the investigation of adult and juvenile criminal and quasi-criminal offenses not cleared by the initial responding officer. The Investigations Unit also investigates drug, vice and organized crime activity. The Tactical officers assigned to this unit provide direct enforcement of criminal activity patterns developed through crime analysis, undercover and covert narcotics investigations, and proactive patrol efforts to reduce overall criminal activity. Bike Unit 3

Two officers of the Wheeling Bicycle patrol

The Wheeling Police Bike Patrol Unit was formed May 1, 1996 and consists of specially trained officers. The officers are assigned to patrol areas of recent crimes, or in areas that the normal patrol car can not reach.

The unit can perform any normal patrol function except transporting their arrestees. For that the unit counts on assistance from their fellow patrol officers in cars. The unit's arrest totals have been climbing each month as they refine their techniques. The unit also conducted bicycle safety talks to over 2000 grade school children just before the start of summer. The unit patrols on black Cannondale bikes with police markings. The officers normally dress in dark shorts and polo shirts with police markings.

The unit is available for visits at block parties and for neighborhood watch meetings.

Evidence/Property Custodian

The Evidence Custodian is a specialist position to which a community service officer is appointed. This position involves the receipt, recording, custody, security, and disposition of all lost property, evidence, and contraband coming within the custody of the Wheeling Police Department. All property is maintained in the designated, secure Evidence/Property Control Room or secured property garage.

Youth Division

Investigator/Youth Officer

This Officer is a plain clothes officer specially trained in handling juvenile matters. This officer is responsible for investigating offenses involving juvenile offenders, crimes committed against juveniles, abuse and neglect cases and other matters relating to juveniles. The Investigator/Youth Officer works closely with the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS), social services agencies, and other youth services.

School Liaison Officer

The school liaison program provides full-time Police Officers: Officer P. Robertson (847) 459-2658 at Wheeling High School, Office S. Treiber (847) 459-2642 at Holmes Middle School and
Officer D. Swanson (847) 459-2659 at Jack London Middle School. The Duties and responsibilities of a School Liaison Officer include:

Act as a resource with respect to delinquency, identification, and prevention

Provide guidance on police/school ethical issues in the classroom setting upon request.

Provide counseling services to students on an individual basis.

Explain to students the law enforcement role in today's society.
