PURPOSEThe purpose of the Academy is to increase young people's understanding of police officers and their mission through education. Our intent is to acquaint young people with law enforcement's role in the criminal justice system and provide an increased understanding of the tasks police officers face in their daily work. WHAT IS A YOUTH POLICE ACADEMY?Modeled after our successful Citizens' Police Academy, the Youth Police Academy is an educational program designed to give the youth an inside view of how their police department works. The program will be a combination of classroom and practical exercises, with an emphasis on issues pertinent to young people and their environment. WHO ARE THE INSTRUCTORS?The instructors are officers and police personnel from the Wheeling Police Department who teach in their own area of expertise. Each has years of training and real-life experience in the subject. WHAT SUBJECTS ARE INCLUDED?The initial class will be an introduction and history of the Wheeling Police Department. The next four classes will cover Field Operations, Tactical Operations, Investigations, Crime Scene Processing, K-9, Traffic and various other police topics. WHO SHOULD APPLY?The Academy is open to Wheeling students entering 6th, 7th or 8th grade this fall. There are five class sessions and each applicant must commit to attend all five class sessions. DATES OF CLASSESClasses will be held on Saturday mornings: DATES TO BE ANNOUNCED Parental consent is required to attend the academy.
Applications are due at least 2 weeks prior to the start of
classes. Interested youths should
complete the attached application and return it to the Crime Prevention Unit. Participants will be
notified if you are selected for the academy. For more
